George Packer on Amazon and the book business

Extraordinary piece by George Packer (whose THE UNWINDING we’ll read at the end of the term) describing the rise of Amazon and the decline of the publishing industry over the past 20 years.  It’s interesting in and of itself but especially resonant after having read MARTIN EDEN, allowing us to see points of contact between the l.19thC “disruption” of publishing alongside a similar (but more thoroughgoing) disruption in our own moment.
