This blog was created by Prof. Jeff Allred at Hunter College/CUNY for his course ENGL 398.47, “Art/Work: Labor and Literature in the US, 1900-Present,” currently being taught in Spring 2014.  Students will read a range of texts from Jack London’s Martin Eden (1909) to Barbara Ehrenreich’s Nickel and Dimed (2001) to Hari Kunzru’s Transmission (2004) and think about the way these texts relate to the broader history of industrial and postindustrial labor, with a special emphasis on the labor that goes into producing culture itself.
